The old rule was clear: you picked one metal. Gold with gold, silver with silver. That rule is over. Mixed metals is one of the loveliest ways to make your jewelry personal. We explain how to do it well, and how to build a mixed stack that looks effortless.

Can you really combine gold and silver?

Yes — mixed metals has been one of the strongest style trends of the past few years. The trick is intention: it has to look like you chose it.

Layered in two colors: a silver-tone link chain close to the neck, a gold-tone heart below it.

Three simple rules

1. Start with a connecting piece. A piece that already carries both gold-tone and silver-tone (a duo-tone earring) makes the combination make sense straight away.

2. Keep an eye on the ratio. 70/30 is a good balance: three pieces in one color, one in the other.

3. Repeat per body part. One metal per body part, but between body parts you are free to mix.

Which color suits which skin tone?

Warm skin undertone (yellow, peach, olive) — gold tones usually do the best work.

Cool skin undertone (a pink or bluish base) — silver tones light you up naturally.

Neutral skin undertone — you are in luck: both work on you.

Tip: check the veins on your wrist. Green means warm, blue means cool.

Earrings — the ear party

Try a gold-tone stud earring in your first piercing and a silver-tone hoop in your second.

Necklaces — layering in two colors

A fine gold-tone necklace with a shorter silver-tone piece underneath looks beautiful. Keep the lengths different.

Bracelets — the stack

Stack two or three bracelets, with at least one of them in a different color.

Rings — one hand at a time

Ideally keep one metal per hand, but between your two hands you can mix freely.

Frequently asked questions about combining gold and silver

Can you really wear gold and silver together?

Yes. Mixed metals has been one of the strongest jewelry trends for years now.

Which color suits my skin tone?

Gold works on warm undertones, silver on cool ones. On a neutral undertone both work. Check the veins on your wrist.

What is a connecting piece?

A piece of jewelry that already carries both gold-tone and silver-tone. It visually connects the two metals.

Which ratio works best?

70/30: three pieces in one color, one in the other.

Can you wear gold and silver in the same ring stack?

Better not on one hand. One metal per hand, and between your hands you are free to mix.

Do gold and silver work for a wedding?

Definitely. Plenty of bridal stylists now deliberately choose mixed metals.
