Which necklace suits which neckline? The complete guide

Which necklace suits which neckline — Lundholm Mera necklace 50 cm with a round neckline

Which necklace suits which neckline? The rule of thumb: the necklace either follows the line of your neckline or deliberately contrasts with it. With a V-neck you wear a short necklace that repeats the V; with a round neck a longer one (50 cm / 19.7 inches or more) that creates space; and with a turtleneck a long statement necklace that falls over the fabric. Below you will find the right length for every neckline — with a length chart and a matching example from our own collection.

The necklace length chart

Length Sits at Best with
35–40 cm / 13.8–15.7 in (choker/short) Snug at the base of the neck Strapless, off-shoulder, V-neck
40–45 cm / 15.7–17.7 in (princess) On the collarbone Boat neck, blouse, round neck (subtle)
45–55 cm / 17.7–21.7 in (matinee) Just below the collarbone Round neck, shirt, sweater
60–90 cm / 23.6–35.4 in (opera/long) At or below the breastbone Turtleneck, high neck, plain dresses
Lundholm Mera necklace 50 cm with heart pendant, gold-tone
EUR 29.95

1. Round neck → 50 cm with a pendant (Mera)

A round neck (T-shirt, round-neck dress) already fills the space up to your collarbone — a short necklace simply disappears against the fabric. Go for 50 cm (19.7 inches): the pendant falls just below the neckline, on bare skin or on the fabric, and creates length. The Mera (50 cm, heart, gold-tone or silver-tone) is the classic choice here.

Lundholm Dyna necklace 38.5 cm with three hearts, silver-tone
EUR 32.99

2. V-neck → short, following the V (Dyna)

With a V-neck one rule always holds: repeat the V. A short necklace of 38–42 cm (15–16.5 inches) with a small pendant follows the line of your neckline and ends above the lowest point of the V. The Dyna (38.5 cm, three hearts) does exactly that — elegant without competing with your neckline.

Lundholm Deni long necklace 85.7 cm with chunky heart, gold-tone
EUR 39.95

3. Turtleneck or high neck → long and statement (Deni)

On a turtleneck or high neck a short necklace does not work — it vanishes into the fabric. A long necklace of 80 cm (31.5 inches) or more falls freely over the sweater and breaks up that plain surface. The Deni (85.7 cm, chunky heart) is made for exactly this: one piece that finishes off a whole winter-sweater outfit.

Lundholm Nilla necklace 39.5 cm with croissant pendant, silver-tone
EUR 29.99

4. Strapless or off-shoulder → short at the base of the neck (Nilla)

With bare shoulders your neck is the stage — a short necklace of 38–40 cm (15–15.7 inches) sitting snugly at the base of the neck makes the most of it. The Nilla (39.5 cm, croissant pendant with cubic zirconia) sits exactly on that line and lets your collarbones do the work.

Lundholm Malin minimalist necklace 45 cm, gold-tone
EUR 21.95

5. Boat neck → mid-length on the collarbone (Malin)

A boat neck runs horizontally — so you want a vertical accent to set against it. A 45 cm (17.7 inch) necklace with a small pendant ends on the collarbone and subtly breaks up that wide line. The minimalist Malin is the perfect match for it: present, but never too much.

Lundholm Elva paperclip chain necklace 50.5 cm, gold-tone
EUR 26.95

6. Shirt or blouse → a chain-link necklace over the collar (Elva)

On a (partly open) blouse a chain-link necklace works better than a fine chain with a pendant: the links give structure next to the collar line. The Elva paperclip chain necklace (50.5 cm / 19.9 inches) falls beautifully into the opening of a blouse — and has a charm ring you can hang your own pendant on.

Lundholm Sola double-layer necklace, silver-tone, 41.5 cm
EUR 29.99

7. Not sure? → a double layer solves it (Sola)

Layering — two or three lengths worn over each other — works with almost any neckline, because one of the layers always falls right. If you want the effect without the puzzling, pick a fixed double-layer necklace such as the Sola (41.5 cm, silver-tone): two layers that always stay neatly in place, even after a full day of wear.

Frequently asked questions

Which necklace do you wear with a V-neck?

A short necklace of 38–42 cm (15–16.5 inches) with a small pendant that follows the V line and ends above the lowest point of the neckline. Avoid lengths that fall exactly on the edge of the fabric.

Which necklace length suits a round neck?

50 cm (19.7 inches) or longer. The pendant then falls below the neckline and creates vertical length — any shorter and the necklace disappears against the fabric.

Which necklace goes with a turtleneck?

A long necklace of 80–90 cm (31.5–35.4 inches) that falls freely over the fabric, preferably with a larger pendant. Short necklaces disappear into the collar of a turtleneck.

What counts as choker length?

35–40 cm (13.8–15.7 inches) — the necklace then sits snugly at the base of the neck. Lovely with strapless, off-shoulder and deep V-necklines.

How do you layer necklaces without tangling?

Keep at least 5 cm (2 inches) of difference in length between the layers, and combine one fine chain with one chain-link or beaded necklace. Or pick a fixed double-layer necklace — that always stays in place.

How do I measure which length suits me?

Take a shoelace or piece of string, lay it around your neck where you want the necklace to sit and measure the length. Compare that with the product length — every Lundholm necklace lists its exact size, often with an adjustable extender.
