Leather Bag and Wallet Care: How to Keep Leather Looking Beautiful for Years

How do you care for a leather bag or wallet? With three habits: wipe it down every month with a lightly damp cloth, condition it twice a year with leather balm or leather grease, and store it dry and out of direct sunlight. That is all there is to it — but do it consistently and good leather will serve you for ten years. It even gets better along the way: full-grain leather develops a deep shine and a character of its own (patina) the longer you use it. Below is the complete routine, including first aid for stains.

The basic routine: 3 steps

  • Every month — wipe it down. Wipe the bag or wallet with a soft, lightly damp (not wet) cloth. Dust and skin oils are the silent wearers of leather.
  • Twice a year — condition it. Apply a thin layer of colorless leather balm or leather grease with a soft cloth, in circular motions. Let it soak in overnight and buff it with a dry cloth. Leather is skin: without conditioning it dries out and starts to crack.
  • Always — store it well. Dry, out of direct sunlight (it fades!), and for bags: stuffed with tissue paper so they keep their shape. Use the dust bag it came with, never a plastic bag — leather needs to breathe.

Stain first aid

Rain or water splashes: blot straight away (do not rub) with a dry cloth and let it dry at room temperature — never on a radiator, as that hardens the leather. Grease or butter stain: sprinkle with talcum powder or cornstarch, leave it overnight and brush it off. Ink mark: treat it as quickly as possible, starting with a leather eraser; if that does not work, go to a leather specialist — scrubbing only makes it worse. Dark patches from skin oils (handles): wiping down regularly prevents them, and a leather cleaner will bring the surface back.

By leather type: what to watch for

Full-grain and hunter leather (such as the Lundholm wallets and laptop bags): the strongest leather, and it only gets better with the years. Conditioning and wiping down is all it needs — the patina is a feature, not a stain. Nappa leather (such as the supple billfolds): soft with a fine texture; use a balm made for supple leather and go easy on water. Suede and nubuck: never use grease — only brush them with a suede brush and protect them with an impregnating spray.

What ruins leather fastest

The four biggest leather killers in a row: the radiator (drying out and hardening), direct sunlight (fading), plastic bags (trapped moisture and mold) and overstuffing (stretched seams that never recover). Avoid these four and half the maintenance work is already done.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I condition my leather bag?

Twice a year is enough for most bags — more often with heavy use or if the leather feels dry. Use a colorless leather balm and apply it thinly.

Can a leather bag get wet?

Good leather can handle a few splashes. If it really does get wet: blot it with a dry cloth and let it dry at room temperature — never on a radiator or in the sun. Condition it lightly afterwards.

How do I get a grease stain out of leather?

Sprinkle the stain with talcum powder or cornstarch, leave it overnight and brush it off gently. Repeat if needed — never rub it with water or soap.

How do I store a leather bag I rarely use?

Stuffed with tissue paper in its dust bag, somewhere dry and out of direct sunlight. No plastic: leather needs to breathe.

What is patina?

The natural deep shine and deepening color that full-grain leather develops through use. It is not wear and tear but the proof of quality leather — every bag becomes unique.

How long does a leather bag last?

Well cared for, a full-grain leather bag or wallet lasts 10 years or longer. The routine: wipe it down every month, condition it twice a year, store it dry.
