Layering necklaces: how to combine multiple necklaces like a pro
Layering necklaces is the art of wearing several necklaces at once. The secret comes down to three things: different lengths (about 5 cm, or 2 inches, between each layer), variation in thickness and a shared style. In this guide we explain step by step how to combine necklaces like a pro, how to keep them from tangling and which ready-made layered necklaces make it even easier.
What exactly is layering necklaces?
Layering means wearing two or more necklaces at the same time, each at a different height. That creates a layered effect which instantly gives your outfit more depth and personality. The trend comes out of the styling world and has been one of the most popular ways to wear jewelry for several seasons now, from minimalist with two fine chains to maximalist with three or four layers.
There are two ways to layer: combine separate necklaces yourself, or choose a ready-made layered necklace where several layers are already attached to one clasp. That second option is the easiest: always the right lengths, never a tangle.
The ground rules: lengths, thicknesses and style
1. Choose lengths at least 5 cm (2 inches) apart
The most important rule: every layer has to be visible. Combine a short style (38-42 cm / 15-16.5 inches, sitting at the neck), a mid-length necklace (45-50 cm / 17.5-19.5 inches, at the breastbone) and optionally a long layer (60+ cm / 23.5+ inches). If the difference between them is too small, the necklaces slide over each other and get tangled.
2. Alternate thin and thick
A fine chain next to a sturdier link adds contrast and makes the look interesting. Wear a thin necklace with a pendant above a braided chunky chain, for example. Two identical thicknesses side by side quickly start to look messy.
3. Keep the style consistent
Feel free to mix shapes, but keep an eye on the whole: minimalist with minimalist, statement with statement. One or two pendants per look at most, otherwise the necklaces compete for attention. You can absolutely combine gold and silver, and our guide to combining gold and silver shows you how.
The easiest route: ready-made layered necklaces
Several layers on one clasp: always the right lengths, never any fuss with tangles. From snake chain to pearls, and the Nathalie with its Y-pendant comes in gold-tone and silver-tone.
Combining your own: build your own stack
Prefer to work it out yourself? Start with two necklaces in the same color and build from there. A proven formula for three layers: a fine short necklace (38-42 cm / 15-16.5 inches), a mid-length one with a small pendant (45-50 cm / 17.5-19.5 inches) and a longer or thicker third layer as the base underneath.
Below is a set whose lengths line up neatly: 42, 45 and 50 cm (16.5, 17.5 and 19.5 inches), plus a chunky silver-tone layer for anyone who wants contrast. All the necklaces have an extender chain, so you can fine-tune the heights exactly.

The biggest frustration with layering: necklaces that end up in a knot. Here is how to avoid it. Keep at least 5 cm (2 inches) of length difference between the layers. Combine different link types: a snake chain next to a paperclip or ball chain catches far less easily than two identical fine chains. Put your necklaces on and take them off one at a time. And when in doubt, choose a ready-made layered necklace: there the layers are fixed to a single clasp and can barely tangle at all.
Store your necklaces separately, for example fastened shut or hung up. That way your layered look starts every day without a knot.
Layering for every occasion
For the office, a subtle combination of two fine gold-tone necklaces works well: a short chain with a mid-length pendant, for instance. For an evening out, make it more layered: three layers with a chunky element, or a pearl necklace as the eye-catcher. And on vacation? All Lundholm necklaces are made from premium stainless steel with a PVD coating: waterproof, hypoallergenic and colorfast. Your layered look can go straight into the pool with you.

Frequently asked questions about layering necklaces
How many necklaces can you wear at once?
Two or three layers is ideal for most looks. Two layers looks subtle and always works, three layers gives a proper layered look. More than four quickly gets busy and increases the chance of tangling.
Which lengths do you combine when layering necklaces?
Keep at least 5 cm (2 inches) of difference per layer. A classic build: short 38-42 cm (15-16.5 inches) at the neck, mid-length 45-50 cm (17.5-19.5 inches) at the breastbone and optionally a long layer of 60 cm (23.5 inches) or more. Necklaces with an extender chain make fine-tuning extra easy.
How do you keep layered necklaces from tangling?
Make sure there is enough difference in length, combine different link types and put necklaces on one at a time. The surest solution is a ready-made layered necklace, where the layers are attached to a single clasp. Take a look at the Tove 3-layer necklace, for example.
What is a layered necklace?
A layered necklace is a necklace where two or three layers are already attached to one clasp. In a single motion you put on a complete layered look, always with the right length proportions and without loose necklaces getting tangled.
Can you layer gold and silver necklaces?
Yes, mixed metals are very much on trend. Choose one dominant color and use the other as an accent, for example two gold-tone layers with a silver-tone chunky chain in between. Or wear the Nathalie in silver-tone next to a gold-tone chain. Read our complete guide: combining gold and silver.
Which necklace do you wear as the bottom (longest) layer?
The longest layer is usually the quietest: a minimalist necklace of 50 cm (19.5 inches) or longer, with a small pendant at most. That way the top, shortest layer draws the attention and the whole look stays balanced.
Can you wear layered necklaces in the shower?
At Lundholm you can. All the necklaces are made from premium stainless steel with a PVD coating: waterproof, nickel-free and hypoallergenic. No discoloration and no green marks, even with daily wear.
