Women's bracelets: every type explained — chain, charm, bangle & beaded

by Noortje van Hilten on May 31 2026

Women's bracelets come in countless types — from a delicate chain bracelet to a playful charm bracelet, from a sleek bangle to a colorful beaded bracelet. But what exactly is the difference, and which bracelet suits your style, your wrist and the occasion best? In this guide we calmly explain every type of women's bracelet, show a few of our favorites per type, and give practical tips on size, material and combining bracelets. How do you choose the right women's bracelet?

Before we run through the types, it helps to settle three things for yourself. First, the occasion: are you after something subtle for every day, or a bold statement piece for a party? Second, your metal color: do you mostly wear gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry, and do you want your new bracelet to match? And third, your wrist: a slim, narrow wrist wears differently than a broader one, and that partly determines which style falls nicely.

Once those three are clear, choosing suddenly gets a lot easier. Below we walk through the most common types of bracelet, each with a short explanation and a few examples from our collection.

1. The chain bracelet

The chain bracelet is the classic among women's bracelets: a bracelet built from interlocking links. The style comes in countless variations — from fine, almost invisible links to chunky, bold ones that sit on your wrist as a statement. A chain bracelet closes with a lobster clasp and often has an extender chain, so you can adjust the length.

This is the one to pick if you want something timeless you will keep wearing for years. A fine chain bracelet layers beautifully with other jewelry (handy for stacking, more on that later), while a chunky chain looks complete on its own. Our Uppsala is a refined double-layer design, while the Greta has a chunkier, eye-catching link.

2. The charm bracelet

A charm bracelet is a bracelet with small pendants — charms — attached to it: hearts, stars, tiny spheres or stones. It is one of the most personal types of bracelet, because every charm can carry its own meaning or memory. Visually, the charms give a bracelet that playful, feminine accent that sets it apart from a smooth chain bracelet.

Charm bracelets make an ideal gift: a heart charm stands for love, for instance, which makes it a popular choice for a birthday or for Mother's Day. Our Lizzy combines a double layer with a heart and a cubic zirconia stone, while the Yaar has several layers with heart charms for a richer look.

3. The bangle and the cuff

A bangle is a rigid, round bracelet you slide over your hand, while a cuff is the open version with a gap at the side. Both have the same appeal: they sit sleek and architectural on your wrist and radiate calm and confidence. Where a chain or beaded bracelet moves with you, a bangle stays neatly in place.

An open cuff has the practical advantage that one size fits almost everyone — you bend it open or closed ever so slightly. Our Ilva is exactly that kind of minimalist open cuff, while the Jol has a natural tiger's eye stone as its focal point. If you want something sparkling, the Yael bangle with cubic zirconia is a lovely choice.

4. The beaded bracelet

Beaded bracelets are back and rank among the biggest trends of the moment. They are made of beads — from fine metal spheres to large acrylic or resin beads in color — often strung on an elastic cord, so they slip over your hand without a clasp. That makes them comfortable, one size, and perfect to combine with each other.

A delicate beaded bracelet like our Yuna (available in gold-tone and silver-tone, in several bead sizes) is an ideal base piece to stack. If you are after color and character instead, look at the Floor with geometric acrylic beads or the burgundy Helsinki with a charm.

5. The tennis bracelet

The tennis bracelet is the most glamorous of the lot: a bracelet with a continuous row of identical stones — sparkling cubic zirconia in our case — that catch the light beautifully. The name comes from tennis star Chris Evert, who lost her stone-set bracelet during a match in 1987 and had play stopped so it could be found. The style has been known worldwide as the "tennis bracelet" ever since.

A tennis bracelet is the choice for a wedding, gala or party, but it is increasingly worn during the day too, for a touch of luxury with a simple outfit. Our Jasmijn has a classic tennis design with a row of cubic zirconia; the Yael combines the tennis effect with a sturdy bangle.

6. The heart and love bracelet

Heart bracelets are not a separate "technical" type, but they are so well loved that they deserve a category of their own. The heart universally stands for love and connection, which makes these bracelets one of the most popular gifts — for a partner, mother, sister or friend. The design ranges from two subtly intertwined hearts to a row of small hearts along the whole bracelet.

Our Alice with two linked hearts is one of the most affordable and comes in gold-tone and silver-tone, while the Jutta pairs the hearts with subtle cubic zirconia stones. Looking for more heart jewelry? Have a look at our necklaces and rings with hearts too.

7. The statement and resin bracelet

If you want your bracelet to stand out immediately, a statement bracelet is the right choice. These are wide, expressive bangles — often made of resin or acrylic with a marble or tortoise look. They have a retro, seventies feel that has come right back over the last few seasons, and they add color and volume to an otherwise quiet outfit.

A statement bangle like our May or the marble-look Fleur looks best worn on its own, so the piece gets all the attention. The Nienke, with its flowing wave shape, is a slightly subtler way into this style.

8. The hand chain

Finally, a slightly more unusual style: the hand chain. This is a combination of a bracelet and a ring, connected by fine chains that run across the back of your hand. It is a refined, eye-catching piece that you mostly see at festive occasions, photo shoots and weddings. One piece that instantly makes a complete look — you do not need anything else with it.

Our Saar has a natural amethyst stone and fine charms, while the Mona is a sleeker, minimalist version.

Gold-tone or silver-tone — which do you choose?

Choosing between gold-tone and silver-tone is mostly a matter of your own preference and the rest of your jewelry. A handy rule of thumb: match your bracelet to the jewelry you wear most often, so everything reads as one whole. If you wear a gold wedding ring or watch, for instance, a gold-tone bracelet will sit best alongside it.

Gold-tone looks warm and classic and flatters warmer skin tones especially well. Silver-tone is cool, modern and sleek, and pairs nicely with cooler tones. Not sure, or do you wear both? Then deliberately mixing gold and silver is very much of the moment — in that case pick a bracelet that combines both tones, or stack a gold-tone and a silver-tone design side by side. Many of our bracelets, such as the Yuna and Jutta, come in both colors. Have a look at our separate necklaces, earrings and rings too, to complete your set.

What are our bracelets made of?

All our women's bracelets are made from premium stainless steel (surgical steel), finished with a 2.5 micron PVD gold or silver plating. That sounds technical, but in practice it means three things that make daily wear a lot nicer.

They are waterproof: you can shower, wash your hands and swim with them on without the color coming off. They are hypoallergenic and low in nickel — nickel release stays well below the European limit — so they suit sensitive skin too. And they are color-fast: stainless steel does not discolor and does not tarnish the way cheaper plated jewelry or real silver can. Want to dig deeper? Read our guide to hypoallergenic jewelry, or find out why jewelry discolors.

Choosing the right size

The average women's wrist measures around 15 to 17 cm (5.9 to 6.7 inches). That is why our chain and charm bracelets are usually 16 to 18 cm (6.3 to 7.1 inches) long, often with an extender chain of a few centimeters so you can wear them looser or tighter. Measure your own wrist with a tape measure, or with a piece of string that you then hold against a ruler, and add roughly 1.5 to 2 cm (0.6 to 0.8 inch) for a comfortable fit.

Not sure about the size, or buying a bracelet as a gift? Then go for a one-size bangle or cuff or an elastic beaded bracelet — those fit almost everyone and take the guesswork out.

Combining and stacking bracelets

"Stacking" is deliberately combining several bracelets on one wrist, and it is one of the most enjoyable ways to show your own style. A few simple guidelines will get you going. Play with different textures: combine a smooth chain bracelet with a beaded bracelet and a delicate charm bracelet, for example, so there is variety. Keep the metal color consistent (or mix very deliberately), and alternate thick and thin so the stack does not get top-heavy.

If you want to keep it calm, two to three bracelets often looks best. For a statement look, feel free to go further. Our delicate Yuna beaded bracelets are designed specifically for stacking — combine different bead sizes and colors side by side.

Care — how to keep your bracelet looking good

Stainless steel bracelets need little care, but a few habits will keep yours shining for years. Put jewelry on last (after perfume, cream and hair products) and take it off first. Wipe it clean now and then with a soft, dry cloth, and store pieces separately — in the gift box they come in, for example — so they do not scratch. Beaded and resin bracelets are best stored flat, so the elastic or cord is not stretched unnecessarily.

Frequently asked questions about women's bracelets

What types of women's bracelets are there?

The most common types of women's bracelet are: the chain bracelet (interlocking links), the charm bracelet (with hanging charms), the bangle and cuff (rigid or open round bracelet), the beaded bracelet (beads on elastic), the tennis bracelet (a continuous row of stones), the heart or love bracelet, the statement or resin bracelet, and the hand chain. Which one suits you best depends on the occasion, your metal color and your wrist.

What is the difference between a bangle and a cuff?

A bangle is a fully closed, rigid round bracelet that you slide over your hand. A cuff is the open version with a gap at the side, which you bend open or closed very slightly. The advantage of a cuff is that one size fits almost everyone, which makes it ideal as a gift.

Which bracelet makes the best gift for a woman?

A safe choice as a gift is a heart or charm bracelet (personal and meaningful) or a one-size bangle or elastic beaded bracelet (so the size always fits). Our bracelets come in a luxury gift box, so all you have to do is write the card.

What bracelet size do I need?

The average women's wrist is 15 to 17 cm (5.9 to 6.7 inches). Measure your wrist with a tape measure or a piece of string and add 1.5 to 2 cm (0.6 to 0.8 inch) for a comfortable fit. Our chain and charm bracelets usually have an extender chain, so you can adjust the length. When in doubt, choose a one-size bangle or an elastic bracelet.

Are stainless steel bracelets waterproof?

Yes. Our bracelets are made from premium stainless steel with PVD plating and are waterproof — you can shower, wash your hands and swim with them on without the color coming off. They are also hypoallergenic and low in nickel — nickel release stays well below the European limit — and color-fast.

Do stainless steel bracelets discolor?

No. Unlike cheap plated jewelry or real silver, stainless steel does not discolor and does not tarnish. The PVD gold or silver plating stands up to daily wear, water and perspiration, so your bracelet keeps its color.

Can you wear several bracelets together (stacking)?

Absolutely. Stacking — combining several bracelets on one wrist — is very much on trend. Play with different textures (chain, beads, charms), alternate thick and thin, and keep the metal color consistent or mix gold and silver deliberately. Two to three bracelets is calm and elegant; more is fine for a statement look.

Gold-tone or silver-tone — which suits me better?

Match your bracelet to the jewelry you wear most often, such as your wedding ring or watch. Gold-tone looks warm and classic and flatters warmer skin tones; silver-tone is cool and modern. If you wear both, you can mix gold and silver deliberately. Many of our bracelets are available in both colors.
