What is the meaning of amethyst? Symbolism, birthstone & jewelry

by Noortje van Hilten on May 30 2026

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz and has stood for inner calm, clarity and intuition for centuries. It is the birthstone of February, is traditionally linked to the star signs Pisces and Aquarius, and used to be worn by kings, bishops and philosophers who wanted to keep a clear head. In this article we explain what amethyst actually is, where the symbolism comes from, and which amethyst jewelry we have in our collection.

Our amethyst jewelry

Four refined rings with purple amethyst or purple natural stone — premium stainless steel with 2.5 micron PVD gold plating.

What exactly is amethyst?

Amethyst is not a separate mineral but a purple variety of quartz — the same mineral as ordinary clear quartz. The characteristic purple color comes from minute amounts of iron in the crystal lattice, combined with natural radiation deep in the earth. The more iron and the longer the process, the deeper the purple shade.

The color ranges from soft lilac to deep wine purple — sometimes even with a red or blue undertone. The most sought-after amethyst has a rich, dark "royal purple" color. Important sources are Brazil, Uruguay, Zambia and Madagascar.

What makes amethyst such a good stone for jewelry: it is a relatively hard stone (7 on the Mohs scale — comparable to topaz). That makes it suitable for everyday wear in a ring or necklace, as long as you do not expose it to knocks or harsh chemicals.

The symbolic meaning of amethyst

The meanings most often attached to amethyst are:

Inner calm and clarity. Amethyst has been worn for centuries by people who want to stay calm under pressure. In the Middle Ages the stone was worn by clergy and bishops to keep "a clear head" during important decisions — which is why amethyst is still known as "the bishop's stone".

Intuition and spiritual connection. In chakra teachings amethyst belongs to the crown chakra: the seventh and highest chakra, associated with intuition, awareness and spiritual clarity. People who work on meditation or self-reflection therefore often choose an amethyst piece as a daily reminder.

Protection and self-control. This is one of the oldest meanings of amethyst — and at the same time the origin of its name.

Why is amethyst called "the sober stone"?

The name amethyst comes from ancient Greek: a-methystos, which literally means "not drunk". In Greek and Roman antiquity people believed amethyst would protect you from the effects of wine. Wealthy Romans therefore had their wine cups cut from amethyst, and wore rings with the stone at banquets.

Today we read that meaning more broadly: amethyst is a symbol of self-control and of keeping a clear view, even when everything around you is noise. For many people that is exactly why the stone appeals — not so much for the old mythology itself, but for what it represents: calm, focus and holding your own course.

A meaningful gift

Amethyst is the birthstone for February — and a personal gift for someone who values calm and clarity.

Amethyst as the birthstone of February

Amethyst is the official birthstone for the month of February, a tradition that goes back to a list drawn up in 1912 by the American jewelers' association and adopted almost everywhere in the world. For anyone with a birthday in February, an amethyst piece is therefore an extra personal gift.

Many people choose an amethyst ring or necklace as a birthday gift for a mother, partner or sister born in February. It works the other way around too: parents often wear a stone that symbolizes their child's birth month. Also read our article on rings with natural stone if you want to look more broadly.

Which star signs go with amethyst?

Amethyst is traditionally linked to two star signs:

Pisces (19 February – 20 March). Because amethyst is the birthstone of February, the stone falls largely within the sign of Pisces. The soft, intuitive qualities of amethyst match the way Pisces are often described: sensitive, empathetic, dreamy.

Aquarius (20 January – 18 February). Aquarius is often connected with amethyst as well — for the inner independence and clear outlook that suit this sign.

Beyond that, modern crystal traditions also link amethyst to Sagittarius and Virgo, especially where mental focus and spiritual growth are concerned. These connections are not "officially" scientific, but they are a lovely way to give a piece of jewelry a personal layer.

How do you wear amethyst jewelry?

Amethyst is a stone that is surprisingly easy to combine. The purple shade is warm enough to wear with gold-tone jewelry, but cool enough to work with silver-tone pieces too. That is why our Sophia amethyst ring comes in two finishes: a warm gold-tone one and a satin finish for a softer contrast.

Styling tip 1 — solo statement. An amethyst ring is a statement in itself. Pair it with simple, slim basic rings on the same or another finger, so the stone steals the show. Our Amara ring with its drop-shaped purple stone works perfectly this way.

Styling tip 2 — tone on tone. Wear amethyst with other purple or deep red accents in your outfit — think burgundy, lilac or dark pink. That visually anchors the stone in your look instead of leaving it as a random accent.

Styling tip 3 — as a daily anchor. Many customers deliberately wear their amethyst piece every day, precisely because of the meaning. Our stainless steel base is designed for that: hypoallergenic, waterproof and color-fast, so in principle you never have to take it off.

Is every purple stone in jewelry amethyst?

Honest answer: no. "Purple stone" is a catch-all term — there are purple versions of cubic zirconia, glass, resin and synthetic gemstones too. In our collection the Sophia rings are made with real amethyst gemstones. The Lilly and Amara rings have a purple natural stone as their centerpiece, which means every single piece has unique differences in color and structure. If you are unsure about a piece in another shop, you can always ask for the material specification — an honest seller lists that kind of detail as standard.
