Can You Swim With Your Jewelry On? What You Need to Know

You are standing at the edge of the pool, or walking onto the beach, and suddenly the doubt hits: do I keep my necklace on? For most jewelry that is a fair question — not everything can handle chlorine, salt water or sunscreen. In this article we explain which jewelry you can safely wear in the water.
Can you really swim with your jewelry on?
The short answer: it depends entirely on the material. For cheap gold-plated jewelry, water (and certainly chlorine or salt) is simply bad news.
High-quality stainless steel is a different story: water is usually not a problem at all. Stainless steel does not rust, barely oxidizes, and can be in contact with water every day.
What is the difference — pool, sea or shower?
Shower and bath — the gentlest of the three for your jewelry. Lukewarm water plus a little soap residue does nothing to your stainless steel.
Sea — salt water is slightly more aggressive, but still perfectly fine for high-quality stainless steel. Rinse your jewelry with fresh water after the sea to get rid of the salt crystals.
Pool — the toughest scenario. Chlorine in high concentrations can soften the PVD layer over the long term.

Which materials can you safely wear in water?
High-quality stainless steel (316L) is rustproof thanks to its composition. At Lundholm we use it as our base, and on the gold-tone versions we add a PVD layer of 2.5 micron.
Better to take off for a moment: cheap gold-plated jewelry, pearls, porous natural stones and jewelry with glued-on elements.

Do: rinse your jewelry with fresh water after the sea. Dry it with a soft cloth.
Do not: shower, spray on sunscreen, swim in the sea and do all of it on the same day with the same fine necklace.

Frequently asked questions about swimming with jewelry
Can I shower with my stainless steel jewelry?
Yes. Stainless steel is rustproof and handles daily contact with lukewarm water perfectly well.
Is chlorinated water worse than sea water for jewelry?
Yes, generally it is. Chlorine in high concentrations can soften the PVD layer over the long term.
Which jewelry can you safely wear in the sea?
Jewelry made from premium stainless steel (316L) is safe in the sea.
Do you have to rinse your jewelry after swimming in the sea?
It is a good habit. Otherwise salt crystals can end up sitting in fine chain links over time.
