Stud earrings for women: which size to choose?

Stud earrings are the earrings you wear most. They sit flat against your earlobe, don't catch on your scarf and go with everything, from jeans to a dress. With studs, it's all about size:

  • 3 to 4 mm: small and subtle, ideal for every day and for a second or third piercing.
  • 5 to 6 mm: clearly visible yet calm, lovely on their own in your first piercing.
  • From about 1 cm: the shape tells the story, like a heart, a flower or a bow.

Not sure? The Nikki with a single clear cubic zirconia comes in 3 to 6 mm, in gold-tone and silver-tone. Wear 5 mm in your first piercing and 3 mm above it, for example.

Minimalist, sparkly or with a little shape

For every day, choose a small, smooth stud like the Max: a ball of 3, 4 or 5 mm in gold-tone, silver-tone, rose gold-tone or black. For a little more sparkle, see the cubic zirconia earrings. Looking for something sweet? Have a look at flowers such as the 1 cm Mave, or at the heart earrings. A shape of around 1 cm stands out, yet stays light enough for every day.

Silver studs: silver-tone or real silver?

Our silver-tone studs aren't real silver, but premium stainless steel with a silver-tone PVD coating. They look like silver, but you notice the difference when you wear them every day: they can go in the shower and don't turn black the way silver sometimes does over time. Real silver is softer and needs more care. All silver-tone styles are in the silver-tone earrings; if you love warm tones, see the gold-tone earrings.

Create your own set of studs

Got several piercings? Put together your own set: choose two or three studs in the same color and wear them from large to small, with the largest in your earlobe. Combine a cubic zirconia stud with a smooth ball and a tiny flower, for example, or add a small hoop. Find inspiration in the ear party collection and among the hoop earrings. Every type of earring, and how to wear it, is in our guide to earrings for women.

Waterproof, hypoallergenic and gift-ready

The stainless steel studs are waterproof: showering, swimming and working out are no problem. They are hypoallergenic, so suitable for most people with sensitive skin. Only take pearl-look studs out before they get wet. Order from our own webshop and you always get a free gift bag. Order on a working day before 3 pm and we ship the same day; delivery times and shipping costs for your country are on our shipping page.

Frequently asked questions

Which size stud earrings should I choose?

A 3 or 4 mm stud is subtle and lovely in a second piercing; 5 to 6 mm is clearly visible. From about 1 cm, the shape itself tells the story, like a heart or a flower.

Are silver-tone studs real silver?

No, our silver-tone studs are premium stainless steel with a silver-tone PVD coating. They look like silver, but they can handle water and don't turn black like real silver.

Can I keep my studs in while showering or sleeping?

In the shower, yes: the stainless steel studs are waterproof. Take pearl-look studs out first. At night, small flat studs are the most comfortable.

Are the studs suitable for sensitive ears?

The stainless steel studs are hypoallergenic: suitable for most people with sensitive skin. Small, smooth studs are a nice place to start.

What kind of back do the studs have?

Most studs have a post with a butterfly back that's easy to put in and take out. The closure of each style is listed on its product page.

How do I put together a set of studs?

Choose two or three small studs in the same color and wear them from large to small, with the largest in your earlobe. Mix shapes, such as a cubic zirconia stud, a ball and a flower.
