You bought a ring and it doesn't fit. Or you want to give someone a ring and you have no idea what size they wear. Or you'd like to order a ring online and you don't know which size to pick. Ring size stress is one of the most common reasons people never buy rings at all — while solving it usually takes two minutes, a ruler and a piece of string. Below you'll find three methods, a chart with US, EU and Dutch sizes side by side, and our shortcut: an adjustable ring, so measuring stops being a thing.

How do you measure your ring size yourself?

There are three reliable ways to work out your ring size at home. Which one you pick depends on what you have lying around and how precise you need to be.

Method 1

String or strip of paper + ruler

What you need: a thin piece of string, thread or a strip of paper + a ruler + a pen.

Steps:

1. Wrap the string or strip around the base of the finger the ring will sit on — not too tight, not too loose, just comfortable.

2. Use the pen to mark the exact point where the end meets the start.

3. Lay the string flat along the ruler and measure the length in millimeters.

4. That number of millimeters is your ring circumference — which is also your EU size. Look it up in the chart below to find the matching US size.

Tip: measure three times and take the average — string has a habit of pulling a little tighter each go.

Method 2

Measure a ring you already own (inner diameter)

What you need: a ring that already fits well + a ruler.

Steps:

1. Lay the ring flat on a table.

2. Use the ruler to measure the inner diameter in millimeters — edge to edge, straight through the middle.

3. Look that diameter up in the ring size chart below and read off your US and EU size.

Tip: don't measure the outside! A thick band can make a 2-3 mm difference. Always inner edge to inner edge.

Printable ring sizer (free PDF)

Print our free Lundholm ring sizer on A4. Lay a ring that already fits on the circles, or cut out the sizing strip and wrap it around your finger. You can read your EU, US and UK size straight away.

Note: print at 100% (actual size), not “fit to page”. The 5 cm ruler and the bank-card frame on the sheet tell you whether your print is accurate.

No string or ruler to hand? Print our own ring sizer. One A4 sheet holds ring circles from 14 to 22 mm (half sizes included) and two cut-out sizing strips, plus a ruler and a bank-card frame so you can check that your print is exactly to scale.

Ring size chart: EU, US, UK and Dutch sizes

Watch out, because the scales are not the same thing. A US size is its own number scale. A EU size (ISO 8653) is the inner circumference in millimeters. The Dutch scale, which our shop uses, is the inner diameter in millimeters — so Dutch size 16 is EU 50 and roughly a US 5½. Compare the circumference or diameter you measured with the chart below; US and UK sizes are rounded to the nearest size.

Most women in the Netherlands wear Dutch size 16-18 on the ring finger (EU 50-57, US 5½-8) and Dutch size 17-19 on the middle finger (EU 53-60, US 6½-9). For men it's usually Dutch size 19-22 (EU 60-69, US 9-13). But this varies a lot from person to person — measuring stays more reliable than guessing.

Tips for an accurate ring size measurement

Measure in the evening, not first thing in the morning. Your fingers swell slightly over the course of the day. In the morning you're usually at your thinnest. Measure somewhere between 6 and 8 p.m. — that's when you're closest to your average size.

Don't measure with cold fingers. Cold fingers are thinner than warm ones. If you've just come in from the cold, wait 15 minutes.

Don't forget your knuckle. A ring has to pass over your knuckle, not just sit around the base of your finger. Sometimes your knuckle is half a size bigger — in that case, go half a size up.

Measure three times. The first measurement is almost never exact. Doing it three times and taking the average is far more accurate.

Stuck between two sizes? Take the bigger one. Too tight is harder to fix than slightly loose. When in doubt, size up.

Secretly measuring someone’s ring size (for a gift)

Borrow a ring they wear often for a moment (and note which finger it’s for), lay it on the circles of our ring sizer and read off the size. Can’t borrow it? Press the ring briefly into a bar of soap or a bit of clay: you can measure the inside of the imprint at your leisure. Or choose an adjustable ring, so you don’t need to know the size at all. Ordering from our webshop? A gift bag comes free with your order.

The Lundholm shortcut: adjustable rings

Handy as the measuring methods are, there's an even easier route. Nearly all of our women's rings are one-size adjustable. That means one design that fits almost any finger between Dutch size 14 and 21 — EU 44 to 66, roughly US 3 to 11½ — by gently bending it a little more open or closed. No measuring, no returns, no “I'll buy it if it fits”.

An adjustable ring is especially handy:

As a gift. You don't need to know the recipient's ring size — it simply fits.

When your finger size changes. Some people swell up in the heat, or from water retention, hormones or pregnancy. An adjustable ring works in all of those situations.

When you want to wear it on different fingers. Like stacking your rings? Ring finger today, index finger tomorrow? An adjustable ring does both.

The Aveline (open link ring), Idun (with stone), Elia (wavy minimalist) and Marit (classic) are all adjustable favorites from our collection. Every one of them premium stainless steel with a gold- or silver-tone PVD layer, hypoallergenic and in a luxury gift box.

Frequently asked questions about ring size

How do you measure your ring size without a ring sizer?

Wrap a thin piece of string or a strip of paper snugly around your finger, mark the point where it closes, and measure the length in millimeters. That's your circumference, and also your EU size — compare it with the chart above to find the matching US and Dutch size. Tip: measure in the evening, and do it three times for accuracy.

What is the average ring size for women in the Netherlands?

Most women in the Netherlands wear Dutch size 16-18 on the ring finger (EU 50-57, US 5½-8) and Dutch size 17-19 on the middle finger (EU 53-60, US 6½-9). For men it's usually Dutch size 19-22 (EU 60-69, US 9-13). But this varies a lot from person to person — measuring stays more reliable than guessing.

What if I'm between two ring sizes?

Take the bigger of the two. Too tight is harder to fix than slightly loose — a jeweler can size a ring down, but that costs extra. At Lundholm you simply pick an adjustable ring and skip the problem altogether.

How do I find out someone else's ring size for a gift?

Three ways: (1) quietly borrow a ring they already wear and measure the inner diameter, (2) ask another family member, or (3) choose an adjustable ring — then you don't need to know the size at all. The Lundholm adjustable rings (Aveline, Idun, Elia, Marit) fit between Dutch size 14 and 21, that is EU 44 to 66 or roughly US 3 to 11½.

Does your ring size change over the years?

Yes. Finger sizes shift with pregnancy, weight changes, age, illness or hormones. Plenty of people find that their “standard size” no longer matches later in life. That's exactly why adjustable rings are so practical in the long run.

Does an adjustable ring really fit every finger?

Almost always, yes. Our adjustable rings fit between Dutch size 14 and 21 — EU 44 to 66, roughly US 3 to 11½ — which suits most fingers. With open link designs (like the Aveline) you can carefully make it a touch wider or narrower by bending it open a little. Always do this gently, so you don't damage the coating.

Can I order a free ring sizer?

We don’t ship a physical ring sizer, but you can download our ring sizer for free and print it at home (PDF, A4), with ring circles and a sizing strip. Print at 100% and check the scale with the ruler and the bank-card frame on the sheet. And most Lundholm rings are adjustable, so you often won’t even need it.

How do you measure a ring size in cm?

Divide the circumference in millimeters by 10 and you have centimeters. For example: a circumference of 56.5 mm = 5.65 cm = EU size 57, Dutch size 18, roughly a US 8. Dutch ring sizes are given as the inner diameter in mm, while most of Europe uses the inner circumference — you'll find both in our chart above.

What ring size is 18.5 mm?

A ring with an inside diameter of 18.5 mm has an inside circumference of 58.1 mm. That’s EU size 58, US 8½ and UK Q½ (Dutch size 18.5). You’ll find every size from 14 to 22 mm in the conversion chart above.

What is ring size 50 in mm?

EU size 50 means an inside circumference of 50 mm. That’s an inside diameter of 15.9 mm: about Dutch size 16, US 5¼ and UK K. To convert it yourself, divide the circumference by 3.14 to get the diameter.

How do I convert a US ring size to EU?

The inside diameter in mm is 11.63 + 0.81 × the US size; multiply that by 3.14 for the circumference, which is the EU size. A few reference points: US 6 is about EU 52, US 7 about EU 54, US 8 about EU 57 and US 9 about EU 60.
