How to Layer Necklaces: Lengths, Combinations and Tips

by Noortje van Hilten on Aug 17 2026

How to layer necklaces: combine two or three necklaces with about 5 cm (2 inches) between each one, for example 40, 45 and 50 cm (16, 18 and 20 inches). Start with a fine, short chain at the top, let the pendant or the longest necklace sit at the bottom, and mix fine and bolder chains. Below you will find exact combinations for 2, 3 and 4 layers, with every piece and its length, plus ready-made layered necklaces if you would rather not puzzle.

The short answer

How to layer necklaces without it looking messy:

  • 2 inches per layer: 16, 18 and 20 inches (40, 45 and 50 cm) is the classic formula. With a long necklace of 31 inches (80 cm) or more, the gap can be bigger.
  • Fine on top, pendant at the bottom: the shortest necklace is the finest; the pendant or the longest chain sits lowest.
  • Mix chain types: flat, twisted, beaded or paperclip. It looks richer and tangles less.
  • One common thread: the same metal, or a shape that repeats, such as circles, hearts or natural stone.
  • Don't want to puzzle? A layered necklace has 2 or 3 strands on one clasp.

Necklace layering lengths: what to combine

The length of a necklace decides where it falls. When you layer, you want each necklace to sit at its own height so every strand shows. Use this chart to choose. Lengths are measured with the clasp closed; with a fuller neck or over a turtleneck, everything sits a little higher.

LengthWhere it fallsRole in your layeringFor example

Use the extenderAlmost every necklace has a 5 to 7 cm (2 to 2.75 in) extender chain. Use it to get the gap between two layers just right: a 40 + 5 cm necklace can be worn at 40 cm as your top layer, or at 45 cm as your middle one. How to layer necklaces: 4 basic rules

  • 1. Keep 5 cm (2 in) apartWith less than 4 cm (1.5 in) between them, necklaces slide over each other and the layers disappear.
  • 2. Fine next to boldPair a delicate chain with a flatter or chunkier one. Two identical fine chains quickly look like one tangle.
  • 3. One statement pendantWear two pendants at most, one of them small. The other layers are plain chains or a tiny charm.
  • 4. Pick a common threadOne metal, or a shape that repeats: circles, hearts or natural stone. That way the stack reads as one look.

How to layer two necklaces

Two layers is the easiest start and works with almost everything, from a T-shirt to a blouse. Take a short necklace with no pendant (or a tiny one) and a second one 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4 in) longer. Four combinations that always work:

  • Everyday goldDarcy twisted chain at 40 cm (16 in) + Cherie with a puffed heart at 50 cm (20 in).
  • Fresh silverMette silver-tone box chain at 40 cm (16 in) + Kerstin paperclip chain with a puffed heart at 50 cm (20 in).
  • Soft and sweetEmma with a zirconia heart at 40 cm (16 in) + Rosan with rose quartz at 45 cm (18 in; 38 + 7 cm on its longest setting).
  • Bold and longBeau 6 mm link chain at 40 cm (16 in) + Ava long necklace at 85 cm (33.5 in).

How to layer three necklaces

Three layers is the true layered look. Build it like a staircase: short and close at the top, a small accent in the middle, the pendant at the bottom. Choose one theme and it stays calm. This is how it looks:

  • Warm gold with tiger eyeMillie 5 mm braided chain at 40 cm (16 in) + Talia tiger eye bar at 45 cm (18 in) + Una round tiger eye at 50 cm (20 in). The stone ties it together.
  • Silver with heartsMarthe with a tiny heart at 37 cm (14.5 in) + Mette silver-tone at 45 cm (18 in; 40 + 5 cm) + Kerstin with a puffed heart at 50 cm (20 in). This turns the silver duo above into three layers.
  • RomanticTilde beaded chain at 40 cm (16 in) + Cecily with five tiny hearts at 45 cm (18 in; 40 + 5 cm) + Mera with a heart at 50 cm (20 in).
  • FestiveOdette with zirconia stones at 41.5 cm (16.5 in) + Anah gold-tone at 45 cm (18 in) + Naomi with zirconia accents at 55 cm (22 in).
Styling tipLay your necklaces flat on a table first, in the order you want to wear them. If you see three clear layers there, it will work around your neck too. A slightly heavier bottom layer, such as a pendant, keeps the others in place.

Ready-made layered necklaces: the easy way

A layered necklace has two or three strands on a single clasp. The lengths are matched for you, you put it on in one go and the strands hardly tangle. Perfect for every day, and an easy gift. You will find every style in layered necklaces.

Good to knowWith a layered necklace, the extender adjusts all strands at once. If you want one layer a little different, combining separate necklaces gives you more control.

Four layers (or more)

Four layers is a statement. It works best with one really long necklace in the mix, so the whole thing doesn't sit around your neck like one thick collar. The smart route: combine a layered necklace with one separate chain.

  • Smart: 4 layers, 2 claspsManou three-layer necklace (43 + 5 cm) + Ava long necklace at 85 cm (33.5 in).
  • Build your ownStina curb chain at 40 cm (16 in) + Halo open circle at 45 cm (18 in) + Naomi with zirconia accents at 55 cm (22 in) + Ava at 85 cm (33.5 in). The open circles of Halo and Ava are the common thread.

How to layer necklaces over a turtleneck

A turtleneck is the perfect backdrop for layers, but fine chains disappear into knitwear. So choose bolder chains and wear the layers over the collar: a flat chain high up, a pendant or a long necklace below.

The opening photo shows how it works. Recreate it with Evelyn (flat snake chain, 41 + 5 cm) and Bo (38 + 7 cm, on its longest setting). For a third layer, add a truly long necklace such as Ava (85 cm / 33.5 in) or the beaded Dahlia (95 cm / 37.5 in). Also lovely: the Våg look with Ava over a fine knit.

Styling tipCount the thickness of the collar: a 41 cm (16 in) necklace quickly sits like a choker over a turtleneck. Use the extender, or choose 45 cm (18 in) for your top layer.

Layering gold and silver necklaces

Mixing is allowed. Choose one main metal and repeat the other as an accent. For example Mette in silver-tone at 40 cm with Cherie in gold-tone at 50 cm, and the two-tone Helia bracelet on your wrist to connect them. The Helia necklace with gold-tone and silver-tone suns builds the same bridge. More rules and examples in how to mix gold and silver jewelry; not sure which metal suits you best? How to layer necklaces without tangling

  • Keep at least 5 cm (2 in) between two layers.
  • Mix chain types: a flat snake chain or curb chain twists around a fine chain far less than two identical fine chains do.
  • Put your necklaces on one by one, from short to long, and close each clasp before you pick up the next.
  • A slightly heavier bottom layer, such as a pendant, keeps the rest in place.
  • Store them separately with the clasp closed, for example hanging up or each in its own compartment.
  • Want zero hassle? Choose a layered necklace with all strands on one clasp.

Frequently asked questions about layering necklaces

How many necklaces should you layer?

Two or three is ideal. Two layers look subtle and go with everything; three layers is the true layered look. Four can work too, preferably with one long necklace of 80 cm (31 in) or more, so it does not sit around your neck like a collar.

What necklace lengths should you layer?

The classic formula is 16, 18 and 20 inches (40, 45 and 50 cm). Start with a short necklace of 37 to 42 cm (14.5 to 16.5 in) at the base of your neck, add an 18 inch layer and finish with a pendant at 20 inches. For a fourth layer or over a turtleneck, add a long necklace of 80 to 95 cm (31 to 37 in).

How much space should be between layered necklaces?

About 5 cm (2 inches) per layer. With less than 4 cm (1.5 in) between them, necklaces slide over each other and tangle more easily. An extender chain of 5 to 7 cm lets you fine-tune the gap.

How do you layer necklaces without them tangling?

Keep enough difference in length, mix chain types, for example a flat snake chain with a fine pendant necklace, and put the necklaces on one by one. The surest option is a layered necklace with all strands on one clasp.

What is a layered necklace?

A layered necklace consists of two or three chains attached to one clasp, at fixed distances from each other. You put on a complete layered look in one go, without separate chains twisting together. Examples are Tessa and Hanne with two strands and Manou and Tove with three.

Can you layer gold and silver necklaces?

Yes. Choose one main metal and repeat the other as an accent, for example a short silver-tone necklace with a gold-tone pendant below it. A two-tone piece, such as Helia with gold-tone and silver-tone suns, connects the two metals.

How do you layer necklaces over a turtleneck?

Wear the necklaces over the collar and choose bolder chains, because fine chains disappear into knitwear. A flat chain of 41 to 45 cm (16 to 18 in) high on the collar with a long necklace of 80 cm (31 in) or more below always works.

Which necklace goes on the bottom when layering?

The bottom layer is usually the longest and carries the pendant, for example a puffed heart at 50 cm (20 in) or a long necklace at 85 cm (33.5 in). Keep the upper layers fine and simple so the pendant gets the attention.

Can you shower with layered necklaces?

With stainless steel necklaces with a PVD coating, yes: they are waterproof and hypoallergenic. Necklaces with pearl-look or natural stone are the exception; take those off before you shower or swim.
