Which Jewelry Goes With Which Dress? A Guide by Neckline
What jewelry goes with which dress? Choose one complete set per dress: earrings, a necklace and a bracelet that work with the fabric, the neckline and the occasion. Below you will find a set for the black dress, the satin slip dress, the knit dress, the strapless dress, the wedding dress (and for wedding guests) and the wrap dress. Plus a quick overview of which necklace to choose for each neckline.
The short answer
The set that works best for each dress:
- Black dress: warm gold with one sparkling accent: a cubic zirconia necklace, small sparkling hoops and a chain bracelet.
- Satin slip dress: fluid shapes: a fine layered necklace, rounded drops and a smooth snake chain.
- Knit dress: sturdy and organic: a long necklace over the fabric, open studs and a bangle over the sleeve.
- Strapless dress: a short, sparkling necklace at the base of the neck with small earrings, or no necklace and big earrings.
- Wedding dress: cubic zirconia drops, a fine necklace and one bracelet. As a guest: colour and gold, no white.
- Wrap dress: a short, fine necklace that ends above the V, drop earrings and a simple chain bracelet.
Rule of thumb: pick one star. Big earrings, fine necklace, and vice versa.
The golden rule: one star per dress
A beautiful dress needs jewelry that finishes it, not jewelry that shouts over it. So pick one star: big earrings or a striking necklace, and keep the rest quiet. Then follow the line of your neckline: a V-neck asks for a necklace that echoes the V, a straight neckline (strapless, boat neck) for a short necklace or earrings instead. How that works for every neckline, with lengths in centimetres, is in our guide which necklace for which neckline.
The fabric matters too. Shiny fabric (satin, silk) asks for smooth, fluid shapes; chunky knit for sturdy pieces; a busy print for calm jewelry in one colour.
1. Black dress: warm gold and one sparkling accent
The black dress is the easiest canvas: everything stands out. That is exactly why one sparkling accent works best. Gold warms up black, silver makes it sleeker and cooler. Choose a necklace with a few cubic zirconia stones, small hoops that sparkle along and a chain bracelet. Is your black dress plain and sleek? Then you can go bigger: swap the hoops for long drop earrings like the Kaia and keep the necklace fine.

A slip dress shines and drapes softly, with thin straps and often a V or cowl neck. Jewelry with smooth, rounded shapes underlines that fluid feel. Wear a fine layered necklace that sits in the neckline, rounded drops in your ears and a smooth snake chain on your wrist. Skip chunky links and big beads: they fight with the soft fabric.
3. Knit dress: long, sturdy and organic
A knit dress is the autumn piece. Fine jewelry disappears into the knit, so go a little sturdier. A long 85 cm necklace falls over the fabric and adds line; open, organic studs are visible without feeling heavy; and wear your bangle over the sleeve so it does not snag the knit. Warm gold looks best with camel, cream, burgundy and bottle green.

4. Strapless dress: bare neck, one accent
With a strapless dress your whole neckline is on show. You have two good options. One: a short, sparkling necklace of 38 to 42 cm at the base of the neck, with small earrings. Two: no necklace, but striking earrings instead, such as cubic zirconia drops like the Bianca. Skip long necklaces: they fall over the edge of the fabric. The same rule works for an off-the-shoulder dress.
5. Wedding dress or wedding guest: who wears what?
At a wedding it is all about the bride. That decides the jewelry too, for her and for the guests.
As the bride
Your dress is already the statement, so your jewelry can be subtle. Pick one focal point, usually sparkling earrings. With a strapless or sweetheart wedding dress a fine necklace of around 40 cm works; with lace up to the neck or a halter, skip the necklace. A delicate bracelet finishes the look without competing with your wedding ring. More bridal styles are in our bridal jewelry guide and bridal jewelry by neckline.
Good to know: faux pearls are not waterproof. Take that necklace off before showering or swimming; the other pieces in this article are fine with water.
As a guest
Avoid white and anything that looks too bridal, like a pearl necklace with matching drops. Choose gold with a colour, a flower shape or a cheerful statement. Bridesmaids coordinate with each other, and as mother of the bride you go for classic gold. More tips in jewelry for a wedding guest and jewelry for the mother of the bride.
6. Wrap dress: follow the V
A wrap dress has a built-in V-neck, often with a print or a soft fabric. A short, fine necklace of 40 to 45 cm ends nicely above the point of the V. Small drops in your ears and a simple chain bracelet finish it off. Silver looks fresh with cool colours and prints with white, gold with warm tones. This set is also available together as the Lagom look, with the Elia ring.
By neckline, in short
Which necklace you choose mainly depends on your neckline. In short; all lengths and examples are in our guide which necklace for which neckline.

| Off-the-shoulder | Short, or two fine layers | Drop earrings |
| Boat neck | 45 cm with a small vertical pendant, or no necklace | Statement studs |
| Sweetheart | Fine necklace with a heart or drop, 40–45 cm | Can be bold |
| Halter / one-shoulder | No necklace | Statement earrings and a bracelet |
| Turtleneck / high neck | Long, 80–90 cm | Small |
Gold or silver, and can you mix?
Gold warms things up and looks lovely with black, red, green, camel and earthy tones. Silver is cool and fresh with blue, grey, white and pastels. Mixing is fine if you do it on purpose: choose one metal as your base and repeat the other in one piece. Read more in how to mix gold and silver and gold or silver: which suits me?
